OneSwarm: A secure and private P2P

lthough widely used, currently popular peer-to-peer (P2P) applications offer no user privacy. By design, services like BitTorrent and Gnutella share data with anyone that asks for it, allowing a third-party to monitor user behavior.

As a result, using a P2P network means that your online activities become public knowledge and can be traced.

OneSwarm is a new peer-to-peer tool developed from Washington University. Instead of sharing data indiscriminately, data shared with OneSwarm can be made public, it can be shared with friends, shared with some friends but not others, and so forth.

They call this friend-to-friend (F2F) data sharing. OneSwarm is:

* Privacy preserving: OneSwarm uses source address rewriting to protect user privacy.Instead of always transmitting data directly from sender to receiver (immediately identifying both), OneSwarm may forward data through multiple intermedaries, obscuring the identity of both sender and receiver. This is like using Bit torrent with anonymous proxies.
* User friendly: OneSwarm’s interface is web-based and supports real-time transcoding of many audio and video formats for in-browser playback, eliminating the need for casual users to master a new application’s interface or search for custom media codecs.
* Open: OneSwarm is freely available and built on existing standards. OneSwarm can operate as a fully backwards compatible BitTorrent client, and its friend-to-friend data sharing features are built on cryptographic standards, e.g., X.509 certificates and SSL encryption.

It hooks up to your browser and then processes your torrent files.
The basics of OneSwarm are pretty simple. The software consists of a web service that appears to be written in J2EE (Java Enterprise Edition), allowing it to run on any OS.

All interactions with the OneSwarm system beyond that, however, take place in a user’s browser. The software is back-compatible with BitTorrent, meaning it functions fine as a standard P2P client.

Unlike your standard BitTorrent clients, this software’s specialty (or weakness) is adding a layer of social networking on top of P2P sharing. When first starting up on a user’s machine, OneSwarm creates a unique encryption key, which it uses to encrypt its IP address information.

Other users can only find you, and thus the files you share, if you’ve established a relationship with them. Although you can create these relations manually, OneSwarm could also open your Gmail contacts.

This use of an existing social network and encryption allows you to become private since no anonymous connections could enter your circle of friend network.

Is Your Website User Friendly

Technology, when successfully used, provides seniors with an invaluable tool to help alleviate isolation as they age, having a positive impact on their lives. I can attest to this as I am blessed with seeing it happen before my very own eyes everyday with my senior clientele. Yet the special interests and needs of seniors have been largely ignored. I believe increased participation by the government, non-profit and business communities to have more senior friendly and accessible websites can have a transforming effect on seniors experience online and the profitability of businesses.

Why should you care if your website is senior friendly and accessible?

1. Studies show seniors are online just as much as any other age group.
2. Seniors have the largest discretionary income.
3. Seniors are in need of many different services and products.
4. Marketers now see seniors as a separate focus group after realizing that senior’s special interest & activities are very varied.
5. There is now a worldwide precedent (Maguire vs SOCOG) that websites can be and are illegal if they are not accessible.

How can you provide a Senior Friendly Website?

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web. W3C recommends websites use XHTML for the content of the website, CSS to display the content and JavaScript to make the content more dynamic. I have watched my clients first hand struggle to access websites of many local businesses that don’t follow the W3C standards. As a result, my clients were unable to access the business’ product or service being offered.

As the seniors population continues to grow so will the number of persons with disabilities. Adopt the W3C standards before you miss out on future clients.

Alternative PDF Viewer

Adobe Reader isn't the only PDF viewer software on the market. In fact, there is a great open source product on the market that Computer Tutor For Seniors recommends called Foxit Reader. Not only will your PDF files load quicker but Foxit Reader only uses 11.12mb of disk space in comparison to the 222mb of disk space that Acrobat Reader 9 uses. Avoid the security flaws of Acrobat Reader, free up your hard disk space and try Foxit Reader.

Adobe Reader Has Security Flaw

Do you currently use Adobe Reader and Acrobat when you view PDF files? If so, you should know that Adobe Reader, Acrobat and all supported versions have a security flaw with no fix at this present time. Computer Tutor For Seniors recommends that you follow the steps below to protect yourself against these vulnerabilities until Adobe announces a fix.

  1. Open Acrobat Reader application.
  2. Click once on the Edit button.
  3. Click once on the Preferences button from the drop down menu.
  4. Click once on the JavaScript button from the menu on the left.
  5. Uncheck Enable Acrobat JavaScript

Check back with us as we will post a link to the Adobe fix once it is made available.

Change the Colour of Compressed files and Folders

Windows uses a special colour to identify compressed files in Explorer. By default, this is blue. You can set this to any colour of your choice.

Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View. Scroll down to “Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color”; check the box and click ok.

Then open Registry Editor. Navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer.

Create a new binary value, or modify the existing value, called AltColor and set it to equal the hexadecimal RGB colour value for files and folders:
Value Name : AltColor
Data Type : REG_BINARY (Binary Value)
Value Data : 0000FF (Default)

Since we need to set the colour to red, we need to use a Value Data of FF0000. For other colours. The values are as follows:

Green: 00FF00
Blue: ooooFF (Default)
Yellow: FFFF00
White: FFFFFF
Black: 000000
Brown: A52A2A

Remove “Log off” from start menu

In regedit :

“HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr e ntVersion\Policies\Explorer”
and
“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur r entVersion\Policies\Explorer”

Create a new DWORD “NoLogOff” and change its value to “1? for disabling and “0? for enabling.

Adjust Graphics for speed(XP)

Windows XP has a lot of new cool looking visual elements, however, those new elements take up more RAM and cause your computer to be less responsive. By tweaking your graphics settings, you can increase the performance of your computer.

To get started, Let's reduce the color quality. This setting determines how many colors are displayed on your screen.

1. Right click on your desktop and select properties.
2. Click on the settings tab and adjust the color quality drop down box to Medium (16 Bit).
3. Click OK.

Next, let's use the windows performance settings to optimize your computer for performance. This will revert back to the old Windows 2000 look as well as take away a lot of the fancy graphics effects. However, if you are really into performance, this is the price you have to pay.

1. Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop or in your start panel and select properties.
2. Next, Click on the Advanced tab and hit the setting button under performance.
3. On the visual effects tab, select Adjust for Best Performance and hit OK.
4. Hit OK once more to exit system properties.

Now your computer will run slightly faster!

Increasing Band-Width By 20%

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etcTo get it back:Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.
